Barcarolle

Updated: May 8, 2020

Here is a small piece called, "Barcarolle" (or June) by, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, that I performed on the piano.

My performance of the song, “Barcarolle” is depicted in two very different ways (as you will notice in the video), both of them coming together to tell an overarching story. The first type of scene you might notice has a dark, vintage atmosphere, whereas the second type has a bright, lively one. Although these two different moods tell an intertwining narrative, they also tell a story of their own, with the dark scenes telling a woeful tale and the bright parts accompanying the darkness, with dreams and hopes.

The song, “Barcarolle”, can be translated to “June” in English, and it fits well with our current situation. The school year of 2019-2020 will end in June, and it will pass without goodbyes to our friends, peers or teachers.

The dark scenes can reflect the woe, grief, or anger that this situation may bring to us, and how we must tolerate the hardship in our small abodes despite our differences. However, the bright scenes mirror our fight against our afflictions, to keep hope until we can regain our ‘normal’ lifestyles once more. It can also represent making the most of this lonesome situation, by discovering new passions, hobbies, or talents, and being united as a community even throughout social-distancing.

I sincerely hope that this video has conveyed some sort of meaning to you, the audience, regardless of what I intended it to be. Making music, listening to music, writing music, it is all a way for us to relax, feel, and reflect.

To me, this song was always sorrowful, with it’s deep and rich chords and beautiful melodies that are present in both the right and left hand. But, within the sorrow, there is always a shed of hope that can be felt throughout the music. Even in life, there is always a shed of hope, if you are only willing to open your heart to its melody.
